RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasivity) measures how gentle or rough a toothpaste is on the teeth during brushing. In general, the higher the number, the greater the potential for tooth wear over time.
This is especially important for people with:
Gum recession or exposed roots
Sensitive teeth
Acid erosion (acidic drinks, reflux/GERD, etc.)
Existing tooth wear
Aggressive brushing habits
In general, lower-abrasive toothpastes (RDA 0–70) are often preferred for long-term tooth preservation, especially in patients at higher risk for wear and erosion.
RDA Abrasivity Ranges:
0–70 → Low abrasive
71–100 → Medium abrasive
101–150 → Highly abrasive
151–250 → Regarded as harmful limit
Whitening toothpastes are often more abrasive than regular toothpaste.
